Republicans Surprised that Detainees at Guantanamo are Human Beings
This from the New York Times regarding the recent Supreme Court decision extending Geneva Convention rights to detainees held at Guatanamo. Bush wants to set up secret tribunals outside of any court system but, since this doesn't appear to be Constitutional or legal, the issue of detainee rights is now up to Congress.
"Senator Graham ... said in interviews that Common Article Three must be “reined in.” He said it would make death penalty crimes of current interrogation techniques, including keeping detainees awake and forcing them to sit in extremely hot or cold cells —methods he referred to as “things that are not torture but are aggressive.”
Agressive, Senator Graham? How about cruel, mean, nasty, spiteful, sadistic, distasteful, unnecessary, ineffectual, torurous? Even worse, this kind of attitude of "we define what torture is" presents a clear danger to our troops fighting on foreign soil. We're the ones supposed to be taking the "high road". By refusing to abide by international law and a signed treaty, most specifically Article Three of the Geneva Conventions, our government is putting all Americans at risk. For such self-proclaimed Christians, these Republicans who have taken over our country can't even follow a simple rule "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It doesn't say "Do unto others before they do it to you".
Who are these people anyway?
